H.C Chambers & Son Ltd was founded by the present owners great great Grandfather in 1877. In addition to operating horse drawn buses and carts, a thriving livery stable and saddlery business was operated. The end of the 1st World War saw the introduction of the first motorised buses, and the increased frequency of bus services to twice weekly to Sudbury and Colchester. Between the Wars, bus services were increased to operate to such far-flung places as Halstead and Haverhill and the expansion into the general haulage, farming and coal merchants.
The period from the end of the 2nd World War, up until early sixties saw the farming, general haulage and coal merchants gradually disappear and the operation of buses and coaches increase. From the early seventies the bus services were concentrated on the Bury St Edmunds to Colchester service (now numbered 753), which is one of, if not the longest bus route operated by an independent company in the UK. Modern day services include the 753 Colchester to Bury St Edmunds, 84 Sudbury via Nayland to Colchester, 370 Sudbury via Hartest to Bury St Edmunds, 111 Sudbury via Bildeston to Ipswich.
Since the introduction of motorised buses, the bus and coach fleet has progressed from the open top charabancs of the 20’s, to today’s Air Conditioned Touring coaches fitted with every comfort and modern comfortable Double Deck Buses and Minibuses, driven by experienced, caring staff with many years of service with the company.
Our operations team consists of Mr. Alec Chambers and Mr. Clive Bartholomey both with more than 25 years experience in the industry,
Mrs. Susan Ashdown and Mrs Dawn Keeble, control our extensive Day Excursions Department. Mrs. Jane Chambers is Accounts Manager.
Our Engineering Department is the responsibility of Mr Robert Chambers assisted by Mr Matthew Saer. Our modern fleet is maintained to an exceptionally high standard in our modern purpose built workshops. Interior cleaning is the responsibility of Mr Vernon Hearn & Mr Scott Lawrence whose untiring efforts ensure that our vehicles go out every day in a clean and presentable manner. We have the latest in drive through automated bus washes to ensure that the exterior of our vehicles are clean, ALL of our vehicles are washed and cleaned after EVERY day of operation!.
Our current & past client list includes many well known names such as Waitrose Stores, One Railways, National Express, Scandinavian Seaways, Daimler Chrysler UK, DFDS Seaways, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Holland America Cruise Line, Avent PLC, Guildford Europe PLC, Transport for London and Suffolk County Council, Essex County Council, Holidays for the Disabled and many more some of whom have been Chambers customers for in excess for 25 years.
We specialise in corporate travel, in particular large functions requiring the transport of many hundreds of passengers. Many of our coaches are accessible to people in wheelchairs.
